Using Metro

The Washington subway system is called Metro. There are five intersecting Metro lines, identified by color (Red, Blue, Orange, Green and Yellow). At some Metro stops, two Metro lines will share the same tracks (in particular, Blue/Orange, Blue/Yellow, and Yellow/Green), so be careful to read the color label on the train itself before boarding. The direction of the trains is indicated by their terminal stops, rather than compass directions. There are no express trains in the system (i.e., no skipping past stops). However, during rush hour some trains will turn around before reaching the end of the line (i.e., the train's terminal stop might not be the final stop on the rail line).
All travelers over the age of 4 must pay to ride. Access is controlled by electronic entry/exit turnstiles at every Metro stop. Turnstiles are activated with magnetic MetroCards, available from vending machines at every station. Every traveler (over the age of 4) must have his or her own MetroCard. There are discounts for seniors and the disabled. The fare for travel on the system depends on distance traveled, so you will need to insert your MetroCard into the turnstile both to enter and to exit. If you travel further than allowed by the remaining amount stored on your MetroCard, you can "top up" your balance at an ExitFare machine near the turnstiles prior to exiting.
