A dimension and application-independent library for multiresolution geometric modeling

Abstract

We present a general-purpose software library for multiresolution geometric modeling in arbitrary dimensions. The core of the library is the Multi-Tesselation (MT), a general multiresolution model for representing k -dimensional geometric objects through simplicial complexes. An MT provides both simple and general methods for handling representations at variable resolution eÆciently, thus offering a basis for applications that need to manage the level-of-detail of complex objects. The library is fully parametric on dimensions of the simplicial complex and of the space embedding it, on the attributes that can be associated with its vertices and tiles, on the algorithms used for building the model, and on the criteria used for extracting variable-resolution representations from it.
